A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Berea Lutheran Church for Dr. Donald Emin Chelgren, 77, of Turlock. He died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Emanuel Medical Center.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Allen Mortuary.

Burial will be at Turlock Memorial Park.

Born June 1, 1926, Dr. Chelgren was a native of Turlock and was raised in Hilmar. He returned to Turlock in 1957, when he started his practice as an optometrist. Mr. Chelgren was a self-employed optometrist for 37 years, graduating from Hilmar High School, Modesto Junior College, San Jose State University, and the University of California at Berkeley with a doctorate in optometry. After graduating from San Jose State, he taught science and coached basketball at Ceres High School for three years. Dr. Chelgren was a member of the Berea Lutheran Church and Lone Tree Duck Club for 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, ranching and college sporting events.

He leaves behind his wife, Joyce Chelgren of Turlock; children, Mark Chelgren of Stockton and Marcie Chelgren-Smith of Eureka; and five grandchildren.
