A graveside service was held Monday at Lakewood Memorial Park for Evelyn Marie Hall, 85, of Modesto. She died Sept. 22, 2009 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born April 7, 1924 to Maria and Manuel Vieira, Evelyn was the middle child of nine siblings. She persevered in her desire to attend school, despite the need for her help on the family ranch. Evelyn was the first in her family to graduate from high school. Evelyn married Bert Hall in 1945 and raised three children, Kathy, Pam and Robert. Evelyn returned to school, graduating at the age of 40 as a licensed vocational nurse. After working briefly at Memorial Hospital in Ceres, Evelyn went on to work at General Foods, CVC, as an industrial nurse and retired from that position in the mid 1980's. After retirement she enjoyed gardening, word games, crocheting, bowling and most of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind three children, Kathy Vieira-McEldowney, Pam Thornberry, and Robert Hall; her sister, Marianne Fogal; her grandchildren, Nick Thornberry, Ryan Thornberry, Garrett and Monica Hall, and Brandy Palmer; and her great-grandchildren, Hannah and Cameryn Thornberry, Maya and Gavin Palmer. She was preceded in death by husband Bert Hall, sisters Minnie, Helen, Pauline, Delores and brothers Manuel, Eddie and Melvin.
