A memorial service was held Tuesday at Davis Park Church of Christ in Modesto for Freida Ellis DeSelms, 83, of Modesto. The former Hughson resident died in a car accident near Calistoga on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005. Also in the car was her lifelong friend, Alberta Martone.

The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs was in charge of private interment at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Born Sept. 6, 1922, Mrs. DeSelms was a native of Lorenzo, Texas and moved to a Hatch Raod farm in Hughson in 1929. She graduated from Hughson High School in 1939 and left for Pepperdine University, where she graduated in 1943.

Mrs. DeSelms lived in Modesto from 1945 until her death.

She was a third-grade teacher for Modesto City Schools for 25 years, including Lincoln, Catherine Everett, Fremont, Rose Avenue and Sonoma. Mrs. DeSelms was a member of Davis Park Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening and traveling.

She leaves behind her son, Wayne Richard DeSelms of Turlock; brother, Dalton Ellis of Hughson; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne E. DeSelms and daughters Janna DeSelms and Cynthia Elledge.
