A Mass was held Thursday, July 7 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church for Jose Reis Avila, 77, of Modesto. He died Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Memorial Medical Center.

Burial was at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Chapel in Turlock.

Born May 21, 1928, Mr. Avila was a native of Biscoutos, S-o Jorge, Azores, and lived in Modesto for three years and previously lived in Ceres for four years and Stevinson for 27 years. He was a dairy owner for 20 years. Mr. Avila was president of Festa do Espirito Santo of Stevinson in 1981, and he was a member of the Lire Acoreana Band, Livingston. He belonged to St. Anthony's Council 30 and UPPEC Council 42, as well as IDES Council 68, Turlock. He was also a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church in Ceres.

He leaves behind his wife, Maria Correia Avila of Ceres; eight children, Marlene Avila of Modesto, Lizuarte Avila of Oakdale, Alberto Avila of Ceres, Jose Avila of Hilmar, Olivia Azevedo of Livingston, Maria Lourdes Rosa of Atwater, Maria Avery of Ogden, Utah, and Lucia Norris of Ozark, Mo.; two brothers, Antonio Avila of Turlock and Luis Avila of Los Banos; four sisters, Filomena Cardoso of Hanford, Teresa Barros of Gilroy, Ines Sousa of San Jose and Maria Almada of Fernley, Nev.; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
