A chapel service was held Monday at Lakewood Funeral Home for Laura Mae Junker, 83. She died April 23, 2012.

Born July 11, 1928 in Turlock to Sherman and Rita Starn, Laura was raised on her parents' farm in Hughson. She graduated from Hughson High and attended Redlands University in Southern California. In 1948 Laura married Larry Junker of Modesto and they lived on the family ranch. When the youngest of their three children was four years old, Laura decided to become a teacher. She became one of Stanislaus State College's first students, meeting in a building at the county fairgrounds. In 1962 Mrs. Junker became Hughson Elementary School's only kindergarten teacher, teaching two sessions a day for approximately 70 students per day. Laura taught in Hughson for 24 years, most of that time as a kindergarten teacher. IShe attended Hughson's First Baptist Church and later the Turlock's Covenant Church where Laura was the main pianist. She enjoyed music and being involved in the church choir and other music related activities.

Laura is survived by three children, Diana Morrow, Janice McKinney, and Douglas Junker; and grandchildren Kelda and Eric McKinney.
