A Celebration of Life will be held on August 1 for Lenard "Lenny" B. Hewson II, 87, of Modesto. He died June 21, 2009.

Born Aug. 17, 1921 in Patterson, Lenny spent his early years in Hughson and Gilroy. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a glider pilot with the 74th Squadron, 434th Troop Carrier Group, participating in Operation Market Garden and the invasions of Normandy and France. He was a long-time employee of National Can Co., retiring with over 30 years of service. He was scoutmaster of Troop 36 for over 30 years. The troop was known for backpacking and over 1,000 boys were members of the troop during Lenny's tenure as scoutmaster. Mr. Hewson maintained contact with many of his former scouts for decades after they left the troop. he was known for his barbeques, pool parties, concocting his own recipes and having the biggest Red Devil firework stands in Modesto. Mr. Hewson also was an avid reader.

He leaves behind five children, Barry Hewson, Mike Thomas, Kandi Hewson, Susan Wilhoit and Patricia Burch; his brother, Roy Hewson of Oregon; and 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
