A funeral was held Thursday at the Hughson Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Othel Lamar McGowen, 83, of Modesto. He died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at Memorial Medical Center.

Burial was at Lakewood Memorial Park under the direction of Eaton Family Funeral Home.

Born April 10, 1920, Mr. McGowen was a native of Fort Smith, Ark., and lived in the Turlock and Hughson area most of his life. He was a truck driver for Ted Peters Trucking in Gustine for 20 years. Mr. McGowen graduated from Hilmar High School in 1942. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gustine, the American Legion and the Teamsters union. He enjoyed hunting, golf, bowling, fishing, camping and travel. Mr. McGowen was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.

He leaves behind his wife, Jan E. McGowen of Turlock; seven children, Erroll McGowen of San Pedro, Kelly McGowen of Hughson, Rex LaMar McGowen and Vicki Kirksey, both of Modesto, Gordon Scott McGowen of Folsom, Cheri Cook of Pollock Pines and Stephanie Horn of Don Pedro; two brothers, Alton McGowen of Stockton and Thomas McGowen Jr. of Fresno; his sister, Ruby Vickroy of Turlock; and 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
