A military memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at New Life Christian Center, 2918 West Tuolumne Road, Turlock, for Roland Reed, 81. He died Aug. 3, 2012.

Born Nov. 17, 1930 in Berrien Springs, Mich., to Delbert and Ruth Reed, Roland was raised in Benton Harbor, Mich., where he attended school. He worked for a short time for Whirlpool Corporation before opening an automotive repair shop. In 1951, Roland met and married Sarah Ruth Burns. Three weeks later he found himself drafted into the Army and on a ship headed for Korea, where he would remain for two long years. In February, 1961, they moved their growing family to Modesto where their youngest daughter was born. Roland worked as a mechanic at several car dealerships before opening his own Ron Reed Automotive in Ceres. Roland was loved and respected by many, and enjoyed gathering with family and friends.

He leaves behind his wife, Ruth Reed; his children, Lyle Reed, Marsha Kingsley, Lori House and Tina Zamaroni; his brother Richard Reed of Lugoff, S.C.; his sisters, Dorothy Hoover of St. Joseph, Mich., and Connie Lippold of Auburndale, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother Maynard, his parents, brothers Robert Reed and Ralph Reed, and sister Mildred Bryant.
