A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Jan. 11 at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Modesto for Ruth E. Runsten, 90, of Riverbank. She died Dec. 2, 2011.

Private graveside services will follow.

Born Nov. 16, 1921 in Ripon to Henry and Caroline Erickson, Ruth lived in Cupertino and Ceres before graduating from Ceres High School in 1939. Mrs. Runsten was a nurse who earned her nursing degree in 1944 from Children's Hospital in San Francisco before marrying Verner L. Runsten of Escalon, who preceded her in death in 1995. She lived in Modesto from 1950 to 2005. She worked as a nursing supervisor and Nursing Inservice Coordinator at Scenic General Hospital for 28 years. Ruth had been a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church since 1937, devoting much of her time to church volunteer work. She was a patron of the arts in Modesto. She was a Townsend Opera Company supporting member, and a Modesto Community Concert Association annual season supporter. Mrs. Runsten was an avid genealogy researcher and traveled to Sweden several times to complete three books on her family's history.

She leaves behind her children, Barbara Kusanovich of Stockton, Gary Runsten of Modesto and David Runsten of Davis; four grandchildren, Christopher Kusanovich of Sacramento, Matthew Kusanovich of Stockton, Tricia Runsten of Turlock and Jeffrey Runsten of Las Vegas, NV and three great-grandchildren, Taryn Coffman, Madison Kusanovich, and Rowan Kusanovich. She was preceded in death by sister Helen Gunderson and brother Carl Erickson.
