A memorial service was held at Whitmore Church of Christ on Monday for Walter Black Jr., 88, of Ceres. He died June 17, 2010.

The Colonial Chapel of Franklin and Downs was in charge of arrangements.

Born March 11, 1922 in Perryville, Ark., as the youngest of seven children of Walter and Eva Black, Walter came to California during the Depression. He was drafted into the Army during World War II and returned to marry Lois Sullivan in May 1947. They lived in Modesto where they raised two children. In 1954, they moved to Ceres where they have lived ever since. Mr. Black was a farmer, and then later worked as a painter for Modesto City Schools until his retirement. He was an active member of the Whitmore Church of Christ.

He leaves behind his wife, Lois Black of Ceres; two children, Kathryn and Steven Black; and seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
