Services were held Monday at St. Stanislaus Church in Modesto for Walter Joseph Amador, 89, of Palo Cedro. He died Oct. 12, 2009 with his family by his side.

Burial was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery under the direction of the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs.

Born Aug. 20, 1920 in Modesto, Walter grew up as a country boy in Hughson, the beginning of his love of farming and his passion for baseball, as a second baseman for Hughson High School. Walt was a farmer and a rancher but also had a career in the grocery business. Mr. Amador was in sales and delivery for Hostess Cakes, owning his own grocery store, a salesman in grocery wholesale and ultimately as a general manager for the Market Wholesale Grocery warehouse in Redding from 1974 until his retirement in 1985. He was awarded Salesman of the Year by the Modesto QT Club in 1973. Mr. Amador served as Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus and he was an active member of Riverview Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping, golf, playing cards with friends and vacationing in Canada, Palm Desert and Hot Springs, Ark.

He leaves behind wife Melba Amador of Palo Cedro; seven children, Wilmer Amador of Harrison, Idaho, Kathy Chartier of Redding, Bob Amador of Happy Valley, Judy Cates of Sherwood, Ark., Patty Amador of Escalon, Mike Amador of Redding, Lisa Krueger of Riverbank; and caregivers Brenda and Larry Lambert, Georgina Roberts and Mary Gilley. He was preceded in death by his wife Trinity Amador, parents Manuel and Louise Amador, brother Wilbert Amador and son James Amador.
