A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Lakewood Memorial Park's Honor Garden for William "Bill" D. Gwin, 85, of Hughson. He died May 5, 2011 after hernia surgery.

Born Aug. 23, 1925 in Missouri, Bill started working in grocery stores while attending high school. He started working at All American Market in Bellflower, then served in the U.S. Army as a supply sergeant in the 398th Field Artillery Battalion of the 97th Division during World War II in France, Germany and Japan. When discharged, Bill met Betty Jean Becker of Modesto. They went on a blind date to the Frog Jump in Calaveras County. They were married 63 years and together they had a son, Ronald Gwin.

Mr. Gwen opened Sav-Mor Market in Hughson in 1948. Later, they expanded to five stores in Waterford, Oakdale, Riverbank and Denair. Bill was past president of Hughson Lions Club and a member of the Hughson Odd Fellows. After 50 years of working in their grocery stores, Bill retired and traveled with Betty.

He leaves behind his wife, Betty Gwin of Hughson; his son, Ron Gwin,; his sister, Shirley Sorensen; two grandchildren, Reinie Jones and Rich Gwin; and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents, B. and Cola Gwin, sisters Ruby and Jo, and brothers John and Ralph.
