Ceres High School's varsity wrestling team had two individual medalists at Saturday's Turlock Bulldog Classic.

Junior Gabriel Balderas won two of three matches on his way to a runner-up finish in the 113-pound weight class.

Nick Moran took fourth at 145 pounds with a 3-2 record.

"They (Gabriel and Nick) were frustrated," Ceres High assistant coach Steve Festa said. "They have high expectations. They got to strive to be better and limit their mistakes."

Balderas lost by major decision, 9-1, to Central Catholic's Angel Velasquez in the finals.

Moran was edged out for third place by Monache's Joseph Ryan. Ryan won by decision, 7-4.

Nine other Ceres High wrestlers competed in Turlock last week but did not place, including Joey Bettencourt (106s), Brandon Christeson (120s), Nick Santibanez (126s), Erick Garcia (132s), Daniel Soriano (138s), Dustin Palacek (152s), Ivan Raya (170s), Ruben Sanchez (220s) and Armando Morales (285s).

Ceres High was 16th overall in the team standings.

Turlock, Lodi and Buhach Colony placed first (181.5), second (112.5) and third (97), respectively.

Western Athletic Conference rivals Central Catholic (96) and Los Banos (63) finished ahead of Ceres High.

"We didn't do as well as we should have," Festa said.

LB 42, CHS 28

Ceres High dropped to 1-1 in the WAC dual-meet standings suffering a 42-28 loss at Los Banos on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs surrendered 18 points on three forfeits.

"They had a full lineup," Festa said. "We didn't. That's the bottom line."

Raya, Palacek, Balderas, Moran, Christeson, Sanchez and Davis Cisneros accounted for Ceres High's individual victories.

CHS 42, Patterson 24

The Bulldogs opened the WAC portion of their schedule on Dec. 14.

Ceres High topped host Patterson, 42-24.

"We had a full lineup," Bulldogs head coach Jon Nowicki said. "That helped."

Ceres High won eight of the 14 matches.

Connor Joseph's major-decision victory (11-3) over Dylan Christiansen in the 120-pound division gave the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.

Connor competed at the JV level as a sophomore.

The Bulldogs will host Pacheco today at 6 p.m.
