For the first two quarters, the Ceres High football team dominated the Manteca Buffaloes. Quarterback Derrick Goblirsch completed 10 of 14 passes for 111 yards, Nick Eudy and Brian Borges each scored a touchdown and Ceres' defense limited Manteca's offense to just 83 total yards.

The Bulldogs failed to manufacture a scoring drive and allowed three touchdowns in the second half in losing 20-14 to the Buffaloes in a non-league game at Manteca High School Friday night.

Manteca extended its winning streak against Ceres to 11 games. The Buffaloes have compiled a 13-1 record against the Bulldogs since 1989.

"We lost but it's not going to hurt our chances for playoffs," said Ceres head coach Bret Durossette.

Manteca scored 20 straight points after Ceres took a 14-0 lead into halftime.

"They were a better team than us in the second half," Durossette said.

"We dropped a few passes. We missed a few blocks. You could tell it was a preseason game."

Ceres had an opportunity to extend it lead to 17 in the second half. But Brandon Gresham missed a 33-yard field goal on the Bulldogs' opening drive.

Manteca responded with a quick score as Sam Miller threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Brian Cross with 4:42 remaining in the third quarter.

Akeem Wade's 1-yard rushing touchdown capped a 13-play, 57-yard scoring drive and cut Ceres' lead to 14-12 with 8:27 left in the fourth quarter.

Michael Turner returned a punt 60 yards for a score with 7:54 remaining.

"We have to learn how to close out a game," said Ceres defensive coordinator Brett Johnson.

Ceres had several impressive scoring drives in the first half.

Eudy's 1-yard touchdown run capped an 11-play, 64-yard drive in the first quarter. Borges' 6-yard touchdown run capped a 62-yard drive in the second quarter.

Ceres also failed to capitalize at the end of the first half. Manteca's Russel Blankenship intercepted Goblirsch's pass at the Buffaloes' 1 with 44 seconds remaining.

Manteca's defense shutdown Ceres' offense in the second half, limiting the Bulldogs to just 64 yards passing and no touchdowns. Ceres went three-and-out three times.

"We lost the game because we didn't make the plays we needed to make," Durossette said.

Ceres gained 267 yards of total offense in the game.

Goblirsch completed 16 of 28 passes for 175 yards.

Cruz Flores had eight catches for 100 yards.

Rafael Valencia had one catch for 12 yards.

Goblirsch had 28 yards on three carries.

Borges had nine yards on two carries.

The Buffaloes gained 264 yards.

"We didn't stop them once in the second half," Durossette said.

Miller completed 5 of 12 passes for 98 yards.

Ceres linebacker Luis Malagon had a team-high 13 tackles.

The Manteca Buffalos registered a safety in the first quarter and scored two touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a 16-0 win over the Ceres High JV football team Friday evening at Ceres High School.

"We didn't play that poorly but we didn't play great either," said Ceres coach Mike Corsaut. "We'll get better."

Manteca outgained Ceres 174-135.

The Buffalos had 101 yards rushing and 73 passing.

The Bulldogs had 112 rushing and 23 passing.

Manteca 29, Ceres 6

Tight end Tony Marquez accounted for the Bulldogs' lone score Thursday night at Ceres High School. He hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zack Atchison with 32 second remaining in the first half.

Ceres trailed 21-6 at halftime.

The Bulldogs had two stops on fourth-and-goal in the second half.

"Our offense did well in the first half and our defense did really well in the second half," said Ceres coach Josh Leslie. "We just have to find a balance. Once we can get on the same page, we'll win some games."
