Bulldogs rebound with pair of wins

Ceres High School's varsity boys tennis team suffered its first loss of the season at Livingston on March 14.

The 5-4 setback snapped the Bulldogs' 13-match unbeaten streak.

It didn't take long for Ceres High to bounce back. The Bulldogs reeled off four straight victories, including two last week.

Ceres High edged host Los Banos 5-4 on Thursday and took over sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings. The Bulldogs (17-1, 8-1) hold a one-game lead over the Tigers and Livingston Wolves.

Gurman Bains secured the match-clinching fifth point for Ceres High. He beat JT Barcellos 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

"Gurman relaxed and started playing better," Bulldogs head coach BryanHarden said.

Freshman Chase Harden knocked off previously-unbeaten Piero Pereda 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 in No. 4 singles play. The victory gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead in team scoring.

"I wasn't expecting Chase to win because he doesn't have the experience," coach Harden said. "He really needed this. He's been struggling."

Harden exacted revenge. He lost 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (10-8) to Pereda earlier this season.

Chase jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third set and held on for a 6-3 victory during the rematch.

"I'm proud of him," Bryan said. "That's the best he's played all year."

Julio Ochoa beat Cory Purser 6-1, 6-1 in No. 1 singles play.

Alick Liang beat Clarke Monroe 6-2, 6-0 in No. 3 singles play.

Victor Pimentel beat Michael Garcia 6-4, 6-1 in No. 6 singles play.

Jordan Mey lost 6-0, 6-3 to Sjard Endom in No. 5 singles play.

Esteban de la Torre and Trevor Brazil lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-5) to Jorge Lovato and PJ Davis in No. 1 doubles play.

Sergio Zepeda and David Cisneros lost 6-3, 6-4 to Calletano Topete and Joey Rodriguez in No. 2 doubles play.

Heath Adrian and Shane Kumar lost 6-2, 6-3 to Josh Bettencourt and Alex Stockdale in No. 3 doubles play.

The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 6-3 at Ceres High on March 5.

Ceres High shut out 2011 WAC champion Central Catholic 9-0 in Ceres on Monday, March 26.
