Ceres swimmers succeed at MMC

MODESTO-- The Ceres High varsity boys and girls swimming teams competed at the Modesto Metro Conference Championships on Saturday at Johansen High School.

"The standings weren't where I wanted to be," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia. "But the kids performances were exciting. They tried their hardest. A lot of the athletes got their best times. I have nothing to complain about."

Eric Scudder, Joey Rossi, Mike Polovin, Jason Winchester and J.C. Reed led the varsity boys to a third-place finish. The Bulldogs earned 380 points. Modesto High placed first (504), while Johansen finished second (415).

Scudder won the 100 free in 51.50 seconds and 100 back in 57.65 seconds.

"Eric's a very talented swimmer," Garcia said. "He's capable of even doing more than what he has shown this season."

Rossi placed second in the 200 free in a personal-best 1:51.37 and 500 free in a personal-best 5:08.12. The junior finished behind Johansen's Brad Fuller in both events.

"He knew how tough Brad was. And he used that to his advantage," Garcia said.

Polovin placed fifth in the 100 back in 1:06.52 and sixth in the 100 free in a personal-best 55.15 seconds.

Winchester placed fourth in the 100 breast in 1:09.21 and ninth in the 50 free in 26.15 seconds. He set a personal record in both events.

Reed placed fifth in the 50 free in 25.06 seconds and sixth in the 100 breast in 1:12.87. He set a personal record in the 50 free.

Vincent Wester placed seventh in the 100 fly in 1:07.74 and eighth in the 100 back in 1:11.89.

Kevin Fliflet placed seventh in the 200 IM in 2:41.73 and 10th in the 500 free in 6:19.49. He took 14 seconds off his previous-best time in the 500.

Markus Richter placed eighth in the 100 breast in 1:15.23 and ninth in the 100 fly in 1:09.97.

The 200-free relay team of Scudder, Polovin, Reed and Rossi placed first in 1:36.27.

The 200-medley relay team of Scudder, Winchester, Polovin and Rossi placed second in 1:49.65. Modesto finished first in 1:49.33.

"We were behind a body length when Joey took off from the block," Garcia said.

The 400-free relay team of Richter, Wester, Ryan Calou and Max Ottersbach placed third in 4:03.53.

Katie Griffith, Jaymie Lenz, Rachel Holder, Kamie Machado, Lauren Griffin and Amanda Arrollo guided the varsity girls to a fourth-place finish. Ceres totaled 306 points. Johansen (562), Modesto (372) and Davis (319) took first, second and third, respectively.

Griffith took third in the 100 fly in 1:06.35 and fourth in the 200 free in 2:09.12. Her previous-best mark in the 100 fly was 1:08.68.

Lenz took third in the 100 breast in 1:11.59 and ninth in the 50 free in 27.63 seconds. She set a personal record in the 100 breast.

Holder took fourth in the 50 free in 27.12 seconds and 100 breast in 1:14.78.

Machado took fifth in the 100 back in 1:10.78 and sixth in the 100 fly in 1:10.11. She set a personal record in both events.

Griffin took sixth in the 100 back in 1:12.62 and seventh in the 200 IM in a personal-best 2:39.96.

Arrollo took sixth in the 50 free in 27.19 seconds.

The 400-free relay team of Griffith, Machado, Arrollo and Holder took third in 4:14.79.
