Ceres High School's varsity boys golf team joined the Western Athletic Conference in 2011.

The Bulldogs posted a 1-1 record versus Los Banos during their head-to-head matchup and edged out the Tigers for second place.

The new rivals split again this year.

Ceres High topped Los Banos 197-204 on Tuesday, April 17 at River Oaks Golf Course.

"We knew it was going to be close," Bulldogs head coach Scott Smith said. "It always is."

The Bulldogs moved into a tie for second place with the Tigers in the WAC standings at 6-3.

Ceres High and Los Banos trailed first place Central Catholic (9-0) as of Sunday. The top three teams in league qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV Tournament.

The Bulldogs have three matches remaining on their schedule. Ceres High will face Patterson (April 24), Livingston (April 26) and Central Valley (April 30).

"We're right where we should be," said Smith, whose team's closing in on its second straight postseason appearance. "We just got to keep playing like we have been playing."

The Bulldogs led from start to finish against the Tigers last week.

Ian Couture, Ceres High's top player, carded his best score of the season at River Oaks. The left-handed junior shot a 2-over-par 33. He had one birdie, five pars and three bogeys.

"Practice wasn't mandatory last week because of vacation," Smith said. "Ian came out and hit. He doesn't get down on himself when he struggles. He figures out what's wrong and tries to fix it."

Couture ranks in the top 6 in the WAC individual standings.

"We had three guys pick up points today and that's phenomenal," Smith said.

Blake Hurst and Jesse Reveira, Ceres High's No. 2 and 3 players, shot 37 and 39, respectively.

Hurst had four pars, four bogeys and one double bogey.

Bulldog teammates Wade Kolodzieczak (No. 5) and Adam Hall (No. 4) finished with rounds of 43 and 45.

Los Banos' lineup featured Chris Corpuz (37), Joey Bennett (37), Zach DeGrace (39), Austin Heredia (45) and Scott Seto (46).

The Bulldogs lost by tiebreaker (No. 1 handicap hole, No. 2) to the Tigers earlier this season at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla.

Ceres High and Los Banos will see each other again at the WAC season-ending tournament on May 2 at Rancho Del Rey. The Bulldogs and Tigers finished 2-3 last season.

"We're pretty equal," Smith said.
