Ceres High's varsity boys water polo team suffered an embarrassing 17-3 loss at Modesto Metro Conference power Oakdale on Sept. 16.

The host Bulldogs fell 9-8 in sudden-death overtime to the undefeated Mustangs on Thursday in the rematch.

"I'm proud of my boys," Ceres High head coach Tim Reyes said. "They played with great strength, intensity and energy. They stuck it to the top team in league."

The Bulldogs fell to 3-5 in the MMC.

Oakdale improved to 8-0 in league play.

Shane Nunes led Ceres High with three goals.

Aaron Torres and Raul Massie both scored twice.

Zach Brook added one goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kenny Carroll made 19 saves.

"He came up big this game," Reyes said. "He was blocking the ball left and right. That's all I can ask for."

Peter Siemsen, Brian Billings and Robby Earle led the Mustangs with two goals each.

Tyler Lee, Chris Terwilliger and Jeremy Nethery all scored once.

Goalkeeper Porter Garrett tallied 14 saves.

Ceres High and Oakdale played two, three-minute periods of overtime prior to sudden death.

The Bulldogs took an 8-7 lead when Torres scored in the first overtime.

Billings' goal evened the score at 8-all in the second overtime.

Siemsen's game-winning shot deflected off the crossbar and into the cage.

Ceres High's lone possession resulted in a turnover. Massie had the ball in his hand while being defended by Billings with 2 seconds left on the shot clock.

"I tried to draw a foul, but they didn't call it, so I dumped it," Raul said.

The back-and-forth contest was tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation.

Ceres High outscored Oakdale 5-4 in the first half.

The Mustangs held a 3-2 scoring advantage after intermission.

"We came out firing on all cylinders," Massie said. "They were shocked."

"I think Oakdale was surprised at how well we played," Reyes said. "They took us for granted because they totally whomped us last time."
