CV girls upended by LB

Central Valley High School's varsity girls basketball team trailed from start to finish in losing 50-33 to host Los Banos on Dec. 20.

"We put ourselves in a hole and couldn't dig ourselves out," Hawks coach Jesse Padilla said.

Central Valley's starting lineup combined for just 24 points.

Julie Calderon had a team-high 12 points. Phylicia Martinez scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Latrisha Jordan added two points and 17 rebounds. Crystal Gutierrez chipped in one point.

The Hawks got contributions off the bench from Madalyn Khut (three points), Whitney Richardson (two), Brooke Davis (two), Tatiana Rivas (one) and Marissa Cabusas (one).

Los Banos center Brooke Silva scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half, including 12 in the fourth quarter. Jessica Davis added 10 points.

Central Valley trailed 34-19 at the end of the third quarter.

"Turnovers killed us," Padilla said. "We had 30 of them."

The Hawks ended the game on a positive note by tallying 14 points in the final eight minutes. Calderon netted five points, including one trey. Martinez scored four points. Jordan and Khut contributed two points each. Rivas added one point.

"It was too little, too late," Padilla said.

With the loss, Central Valley dropped to 2-5 on the season.
