Ceres High School's varsity baseball team dropped a pair of Valley Oak League games to Sierra last week.

The Bulldogs committed 12 errors during the series, including 10 in a 7-2 loss to the Timberwolves during Game 2 on Thursday at Art McRae Field. Ceres High also struck out a whopping 22 times on offense.

"I honestly couldn't tell you why," Bulldogs coach Julio Marquez said. "I don't know if it's a confidence thing on the kids' part. I don't know if they're putting too much pressure on themselves. It's shocking. We're going to address that at practice."

Ceres High (7-6 overall, 3-5 VOL) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning during the second game when Tyler Cummings drove in Martino Bertolotti and Grant Hurst with a single.

The Timberwolves outscored the Bulldogs 7-0 the rest of the way. Sierra tallied four runs in the top of the third inning and added three more in the fourth as Ceres High self-destructed on defense.

"Everything just fell apart after the second inning," Marquez said. "We beat ourselves."

The Bulldogs totaled five hits and struck out 12 times on offense.

Cummings batted 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Hurst doubled and scored a run in four at-bats.

Bertolotti singled and scored once.

Nick Welsh collected two singles.

Robert Cope, Ceres High's starting pitcher, lasted four innings. He gave up one earned run, allowed two hits and retired two batters via strikeout.

Sierra (8-4, 5-1) pushed four runs across home plate in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on for a 5-4 comeback victory in Game 1 on Tuesday, March 31 in Manteca.

The Timberwolves battled back after the Bulldogs grabbed a 2-1 lead on Bertolotti's double in the top of the fifth inning.

Ceres High cut the deficit to one when Cummings blasted a two-run homer to right in the sixth inning.

The Bulldogs posted a team-batting average of .250 (6-for-24), to go along with 10 strikeouts against Sierra.

Baisdon scored a run and singled.

Cope added a run.

Welsh singled.

Cummings, Ceres High's ace pitcher, surrendered five runs (four earned) on six hits, two walks and one hit batsman over six innings. He totaled seven strikeouts.
