Central Valley High School's varsity boys tennis program had three singles players and two doubles teams participate in the Western Athletic Conference year-end championships last week at Pacheco High School.

"I thought we competed pretty well," Hawks head coach Rodriguez said.

In singles play on Friday, senior Chan Chau wrapped up his prep tennis career with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 loss to Patterson's John Minton.

"He played hard the whole year," Rodriguez said.

Alexis Zigala failed to win a game while losing in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) to finalist Sterling Ramirez of Patterson.

"He had the toughest draw playing the co-MVP of the league," Rodriguez said. "He did the best he could."

Chau and Zigala lost 6-1, 6-3 to Los Banos' Cory Purser and Piero Pereda in doubles play on Saturday.

Alexis Villa (freshman) and Alex Hernandez (junior) showed improvement during their 6-1, 6-4 loss to Ceres High's Chase Harden and Victor Pimentel.

Central Valley (2-10) placed sixth in the WAC standings this year.

"We got a good, young group coming back next year," Rodriguez said. "If they put some work in this summer, they'll get better."
