Hawks improve in compiling 2-2 record at Tracy Winter Classic

Central Valley High School's varsity boys basketball team turned in a respectable performance at the Tracy Winter Holiday Classic last week.

The youth-laden Hawks compiled a 2-2 record and improved to 4-7 on the year. Central Valley, which has a roster loaded with underclassmen, won back-to-back games in the consolation bracket.

"We definitely got better," head coach Darryl Dickson said. "We're close to putting complete games together. If we do that, we're going to be extremely competitive."

The Hawks cruised to a 68-47 victory over Pacheco on Thursday.

Nine different players scored for Central Valley, including Camron Thornton, Miguel Rodriguez, Jaron Dickson, Diego Sanchez, Ja'Quan Gardner, Edgar Urbieta, Hawk Duarte, Cristian Chavez and Minder Singh.

Central Valley defeated Delta Charter 78-59 on Wednesday.

Rodriguez and Sanchez led the Hawks on offense with 17 points apiece.

Jordan Sek added 11 points. Thornton and Dickson contributed 10 points each.Gardner and Urbieta chipped in with four points. Duarte had three points. Chavez and Singh both scored two points.

The Hawks lost 75-46 to Modesto High on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

Thornton collected 15 points.

Gardner totaled 11 points.

Sanchez and Urbieta had seven and five points, respectively.

Sek, Milton Uti, Amrit Chahal and A.J. Evans all chipped in with two points apiece.

Runner-up Tokay topped Central Valley 71-40 in the opening round on Monday, Dec. 19.

Thornton scored a team-high 19 points for the Hawks. Dickson had six points. Rodrigiez, Sanchez and Sek all collected four points. Gardner added three points.

Ja'Quan, Diego, Jordan and Milton are sophomores. Jaron is just a freshman.

"They got better," coach Dickson said. "They were the reason we were able to sustain our leads and win."
