Ceres High’s and Central Valley’s boys golf teams competed at home against league opponents this past week.

The fourth-place Bulldogs improved to 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 385-430 victory over the Grace Davis Spartans on April 19 at St. Stanislaus Golf Course.

“We did what we were supposed to do,” said Ceres High Coach Ron Edwards. “But I wasn’t expecting us to win by that much. My guys are all getting better.”

All-league returnee Jayson Homsombath led the Bulldogs with a 59.

Ceres High teammates Miles Cabling, Zachary Chastain, Marcus Granados and Benjamin Larranaga shot 70, 81, 85 and 90, respectively.

“Jayson and Miles have both carried the team. He (Homsombath) knows I expect that from him. He’s played for me since he was a freshman. He’s gotten better every year. He’s playing with a lot of confidence right now. That’s something he’s been struggling with. Miles is a good fit for the team. He’s been doing a great job.”

The top three teams in the WAC qualify for the playoffs at the end of the regular season.

Mountain House was in first place as of Monday.

Beyer and Los Banos were in a tie for second.

Ceres High has an outside shot at advancing to the postseason.

“We’re better than I thought we’d be. I thought we’d struggle because we have a lot of new kids.”

Sixth-place Central Valley dropped a pair of Central California Conference matches at St. Stanislaus.

“We’re playing a lot of different guys and still making positive improvements,” noted Hawks’ Coach Scott Edwards.

Central Valley fell to 2-10 in the CCC standings after losing 177-202 to the Golden Valley Cougars on April 20.

“It’s our lowest score of the season at home,” said Edwards. “Guys are getting better. They’re still having fun. It’s good to see.”

Freshman William Montez led the Hawks with a 36.

“He had a really good round,” Edwards said. “He’s young. He’s new to the game. He’s made some strides the last couple of weeks. Hopefully, he can finish the year off strong.”

Central Valley teammates Dillon Brush, Armando Guajardo, Daniel Castillo and Gabriel Davila-Sanchez shot 38, 40, 41 and 47, respectively.

The Hawks lost 175-224 to the Atwater Falcons on April 18.

“We saw Atwater twice within a couple of weeks,” Edwards said. “Top to bottom, they’re impressive. They’re really good and consistent.”

Brush led Central Valley with a 34.

“He’s been our No. 1 player for the last month,” Edwards said. “He continues to do a solid job. He’s consistently had respectable scores.”

Davila-Sanchez and Daniel Jacinto finished with identical rounds of 46.

Montez (47) and freshman Alex Aguilar (51) rounded out the Hawks’ scorecard.

“I got a core group of players that have been very consistent. They’ve put in the effort at practice and during matches. There’s still interest to play.”

Central Valley has two conference dual matches left on its schedule.

The Hawks will play host to Buhach Colony tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

The CCC Year-End Tournament will be staged on May 2 at Dryden Park Golf Course.

“It’s a good golf league,” Edwards said. “Every other team has a top dog or they’re deep.”
