Ceres High’s water polo program played host to Beyer and Johansen last week.
The Patriots and Vikings swept the Bulldogs.
Ceres High’s girls dropped to 1-2 in the Western Athletic Conference standings after being beaten by both teams.
“I think the kids did great,” Bulldogs’ head coach Stephen Dias said. “They never gave up. They gelled together as a team.”
Ceres High lost 17-15 to Johansen in overtime on Thursday.
The Bulldogs battled back from a five-goal deficit before losing to the Vikings.
Johansen forced OT with a goal at the end of regulation.
“It was an evenly, matched game,” Dias said.
The Vikings won despite surrendering back-to-back goals in the first of two three-minute overtime periods.
“I figured we were going to win,” Dias said. “They gave their all. They had nothing left.”
Amber Hopwood led Ceres High in scoring with eight goals.
Haley Gaskill added three goals.
Kaylie Clindaniel had two goals.
The Blevins sisters, Lilly and Jessie, both tallied one goal.
Arleth Sanchez totaled eight blocks at goalkeeper.
Ceres High lost 14-1 to Beyer on Sept. 12.
“They’re good,” Dias said. “They have club teams. They play all-year long. I know we could have played better defense. They still would have won.”
Hopwood accounted for the Bulldogs’ lone goal.
Sanchez made seven saves.
Ceres High’s boys fell to 0-2 in WAC play after being beaten by the Patriots and Vikings.
“Looking at how my team played against Johansen and Beyer, I can say I am proud of them for taking the skills that they’ve learned in practice and using them in the game,” Bulldogs’ new head coach Angelique Alvarado Huerta said. “They were able to set up, get open and attempt some good shots using teamwork. I will say they need to work on communicating during the game more often but that will happen as the season goes on and they get more comfortable talking to each other during the game.”
Ceres High lost 14-7 to Johansen on Thursday.
Abel Samaniego led the Bulldogs in scoring with four goals.
Eli Farinha added two goals.
Julian Hernandez had one goal.
Jesus Valdovinos totaled four blocks at goalkeeper.
Ceres High lost 17-6 to Beyer on Sept. 12.
Samaniego tallied a team-high three goals.
Farinha collected two goals.
Elijah Rodriguez netted one goal.
Mateo Gonzalez finished with three saves at goalkeeper.
FLAG FOOTBALL
Ceres High’s girls flag football team continued its run of success this past week.
The Bulldogs rolled to a 38-8 win over host Lathrop in Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday.
“It’s our best game we’ve played on both sides of the ball,” Ceres High head coach Curtis Hulstine said.
The Bulldogs improved to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC standings.
“I had no idea how the season was going to go,” Hulstine said. “These girls are surprising me. Our first practices were a little rough. We had a lot of learning to do. I’m very lucky to have the athletes and coaches that I have.”
Marissa Renteria, Ceres High’s dual-threat quarterback, piled up 320 yards of offense against Lathrop.
She threw for 143 yards and four touchdowns.
She ran for 177 yards.
Renteria intercepted three passes, returning two of them for touchdowns, on defense.
“She plays like that every game,” Hulstine said.
Maddie Schultz, Hailey Tsurui, Mariah Renteria and Nehemiah Valenzuela all had one receiving touchdown.
Ceres High shut out Sierra 12-0 in non-league play on Sept. 12 in Manteca.
