CV girls top Atwater, lose to El Capitan

Mixtly Vega and Central Valley’s varsity girls tennis team topped Atwater 6-3 on Thursday in Ceres. Vega won her No. 4 singles match.

Central Valley’s varsity girls tennis team won one of two matches against Central California Conference competition last week.

The Hawks improved to 4-3 on the year and 2-1 in the CCC standings after topping visiting Atwater 6-3 on Thursday in Ceres.

Central Valley won five of six singles and two of three doubles matches against Atwater.

Lupe Becerra topped Anessa Cardenas 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles play.

Sunaina Dhillon topped Allison Warnock 6-1, 6-2 in No. 3 singles play.

Mixtly Vega topped Marissa Orozco 6-4, 6-1 in No. 4 singles play.

Elisabeth Valdez topped Citlali Haro 6-4, 6-4 in No. 5 singles play.

Bandha Bhatti topped Jacky Molina 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in No. 6 singles play.

Daniela Yepez and Virginia Moore topped Isabel Escobedo and Stephanie Anguiano 7-5, 6-3 in No. 1 doubles play.

Christina Hermenegildo and Sabina Dhillon topped Megan Brock and Teresa Cavallero 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles play.

Sadie Porras and Priscilla Sanchez lost 6-7 (0-7), 6-4, 10-5 to Mayra Alvarez and Clarissa Orozco in No. 3 doubles play.

Gianna Arce lost 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Alondra Celis in No. 2 singles play.

Host Central Valley lost 6-3 to El Capitan on Sept. 4.

“I felt it was a match we could have won,” Rodriguez said. “We just didn’t play well. We were inconsistent with our shots. We had a lot of unforced errors by everybody.”

Central Valley dropped four of six singles and two of three doubles matches to El Capitan.

Valdez topped Paula Almeda 6-2, 6-2 in No. 5 singles play.

Bhatti topped Serenna Malhi 7-5, 6-3 in No. 6 singles play.

Becerra lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jenasis Yarrell in No. 1 singles play.

Arce lost 6-0, 6-0 to Riddhi Parikh in No. 2 singles play.

Dhillon lost 6-2, 6-4 to Anna Gueorguieva in No. 3 singles play.

Vega lost 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 to Karen Godinez in No. 4 singles play.

Yepez and Moore defeated Casandra Macalincag and Megan Bowser 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 doubles play.

Hermenegildo and Dhillon lost 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Lauren Leonardo and Kayla Ochoa in No. 2 doubles play.

Porras and Sanchez lost 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 10-3 to Italia Valenzuela and Alyssa Molina in No. 3 doubles play.

A newcomer to the CCC, Central Valley compiled a 2-1 record during the first two weeks.

The Hawks previously competed in the Western Athletic Conference.

Central Valley switched leagues as part of the Sac-Joaquin Section’s conference realignment plan.

“Every match has been tough,” Rodriguez said. “It’s definitely been a step up in competition.”
