The Lady Sharx Volleyball Club will be staging a camp for boys and girls, ages 5-17, June 23-25 at Ceres High School.

"For the younger ones, it's to introduce them to the sport and teach them fundamentals," said Kelly Heese, Lady Sharx founder/director. "For the older ones, it's to prepare them for club or high school tryouts."

Heese and her coaching staff will provide instruction from 6-7:30 p.m. inside Phil de la Porte Gymnasium during the three-day camp.

"Our whole entire program will be out there as well as former high school and college players," Heese said. "Our athletes get feedback from experienced coaches. We try to keep things very family-oriented."

Emphasis will be placed on serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, serve receive, defense, communication and team work.

Approximately 65 boys and girls attended last year's clinic.

"They're all separated by their skill level," Heese said. "It's really valuable for the youngers athletes. We introduce them to the sport and what they have to look forward to in the future. They learn the proper fundamentals and build a love for the game. For the older ones, it (the camp) allows teammates to develop chemistry before the season starts."

Cost is $100 per athlete.

Each camper will receive a T-shirt.

Heese doubled as head coach of Ceres High’s boys and girls volleyball programs for the fifth consecutive year in 2025-26.

"I coach because I love helping athletes discover what they're capable of," she said. "It's more than a sport. You can teach them discipline, confidence, resilience, leadership and teamwork."

Ceres High’s boys team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons to date in 2024-25 by compiling an 11-9 overall record and placing fourth in the Western Athletic Conference with an 8-6 mark.

The Bulldogs finished 6-10 and fifth in the WAC standings (6-8) this past spring.

Ceres High's girls team posted a 9-9 overall record and placed fourth in league with an 8-6 mark in 2025-26.

The Bulldogs increased their win total for the second year in a row.

Heese previously coached at crosstown-rival Central Valley High School.

Central Valley’s girls team reached unprecedented heights under her guidance from 2012-16.

The Hawks amassed a 30-23 record in WAC action and qualified for the postseason three times.

Heese has over 25 years of coaching experience.

“It’s a sport that gets overlooked by people," she said. "There is so much to offer. There are a lot of college scholarships available for boys and girls. Coaches are searching for players. Continuously playing gives you a greater advantage.”
