The Ceres High girls tennis team concluded the 2004 season with a 3-2 victory over the Davis Spartans at the SOS Club in Modesto on Thursday.
"I knew we could compete with them," said Ceres coach Bryan Harden. "I didn't expect to win."
The Bulldogs managed to compile a winning record this year despite losing five of seven starters to graduation.
"I'm frustrated in a sense that I wanted to do better because I'm a competitor," Harden said. "But I'm also happy and excited at how well the kids played.
"They should be proud of themselves."
Ceres won its final four matches and finished third in the Modesto Metro Conference with an 8-7 record. Davis tied for second in the league standings with Beyer at 9-6. The Patriots made the playoffs.
"We were right there," Harden said. "One more win would have got us in the playoffs. The frustrating part is I think we're a better team than Beyer."
The Bulldogs won one of three singles and both doubles matches against the Spartans.
Ashlee Moring defeated Katherine Havrylenko 6-4, 6-3 in No. 3 singles play.
Haylee Adrian and Melissa Gonzales defeated Paulina Lopez and Marie Mann 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles play.
Kamie Machado and Karolina Munzova defeated Vanessa Hawkins and Jessica Tsuruda 6-1, 6-1 in No. 2 doubles play.
Dawgs defeat Knights
Ceres defeated Downey 5-0 in Modesto on Tuesday, Oct. 26.
The Bulldogs beat the Knights three times this season.
Ceres won two of three singles and both doubles matches during the third meeting.
Guajardo defeated Theva Saenoudomsack in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in No. 1 singles play.
Moring defeated Anabel Reyes 6-2, 7-5 in No. 3 singles play.
In No. 1 doubles play, Adrian and Gonzales defeated Betsy Lopez and Iris Lizama 6-3, 7-5.
Machado and Munzova defeated Ali Burden and Helena Frankander 6-1, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles play.
Logan Harden lost 6-3, 6-3 to Audrey Burgess in No. 2 singles play.
