Raiders edge out Hawks for WAC's No. 2 playoff spot

Central Valley’s and Central Catholic’s varsity boys tennis teams posted identical 9-3 record while tying for second place in the Western Athletic Conference standings.

The Hawks and Raiders played a WAC tiebreaker match earlier this week to determine the league’s second and final playoff seeds for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-II playoffs.

Central Catholic edged host Central Valley 5-4 on Monday and earned the right to host a first-round postseason contest.

“It’s disappointing any time we lose,” Hawks head coach Mike Rodriguez said. “The kids played hard. It was really competitive. It would have been nice to host a playoff match. We still accomplished a lot this year. We’re pretty satisfied.”

Tied at 4-all, Central Catholic’s Juston Forte and Joseph Minato beat Central Valley’s Ruben Morales and Nimrit Chahal 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 in No. 1 doubles play to secure the team victory.

“It was an extremely close match,” Rodriguez said. “We lost in three sets.”

Alexis Zigala beat Central Catholic’s Chris Huber 6-4, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

Edgar Castillo beat Connor Garcia 6-1, 6-4 in No. 3 singles play.

Gerardo Rivas beat Brendan Bedolla 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in No. 6 singles play.

Oscar Gomez and Jorge Bustos beat Mark Dunn and Tony Shen 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in No. 2 doubles play.

Alexis Villa lost 6-0, 6-0 to Connor Fenton in No. 1 singles play.

Eric Morales lost 6-1, 6-3 to Daniel Bocks in No. 4 singles play.

Brandyn Weis lost 6-4, 6-2 to Sam Nicholson in No. 5 singles play.

Julio Pena and Osvaldo Sanchez lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to John Forester and Jared Alamo in No. 3 doubles play.

Central Valley compiled a 1-2 record against Central Catholic this year.

The visiting Hawks suffered a 5-4 loss while battling the Raiders during the final day of the WAC regular season on April 16.

Zigala beat Huber 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles play.

Rivas beat Bedolla 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in No. 6 singles play.

Chahal and Ruben Morales beat Forte and Dunn 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) in No. 1 doubles play.

Bustos and Gomez beat Shen and Alamo 6-1, 7-5 in No. 2 doubles play.

Villa lost 6-0, 6-1 to Fenton in No. 1 singles play.

Castillo lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Garcia in No. 3 singles play.

Eric Morales lost 6-2, 6-2 to Bocks in No. 4 singles play.

Weis lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Nicholson in No. 5 singles play.

Navjot Kanda and Jesus Cuevas lost 6-1, 6-4 to Forester and Anthony Tan in No. 3 doubles play.

Central Valley defeated Central Catholic 7-2 on March 21 in Ceres.

The Hawks (9-4) will face the Capital Athletic League’s No. 2 seed on the road in the playoffs next Monday.
