Running game powers Patriots past Dawgs

Beyer scored three times in the second half and rolled to a 35-7 victory against the Ceres High varsity football team Friday night in Ceres.

The Patriots extended their lead to 21-0 in the third quarter on Nico Van Slyke's 19-yard touchdown run. Beyer marched 65 yards in less than 2 minutes.

“That first drive killed us,” said Ceres receiver/defensive back Armando Valencia. “It was a dagger.”

With the loss, the Bulldogs fell to 1-6 overall, 0-2 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

With the win, the Patriots improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the MMC standings.

“We wanted to put on a show,” Valencia said. “I thought we were going to blow them out. They're not that good. We just didn't execute too well tonight.”

Beyer racked up 345 yards of offense, including 223 rushing on 34 carries.

Van Slyke ran for 69 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns.

Stephen Ortega ran for 49 yards on nine carries and scored two touchdowns.

Quarterback Michael Cerda completed 7 of 12 passes for 114 yards with one touchdown. Ryan Strasser had a 40-yard TD reception.

The Bulldogs gained 251 yards of offense, including 136 rushing on 39 carries. Dingko Luangchai ran for 44 yards on 14 carries. Byron Clark ran for 30 yards on six carries.

Junior quarterback Ross Tate completed 8 of 17 passes for 115 yards with one touchdown and an interception. Valencia hauled in a 28-yard TD pass. Luangchai had three catches for 42 yards.

Ceres trailed at halftime despite running more than twice as many plays from scrimmage (39-18).

“Offensively, we weren't that bad,” said Ceres coach Bret Durossette. “We couldn't put it in the end zone.”

Ceres had several drives stall in Beyer territory.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs at the Patriots' 29-yard line in the first quarter.

Tate fumbled at the Beyer 42 and kicker Daniel Munoz missed a 37-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

The Patriots led 14-0 at the break. Ortega scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. Cerda threw a 40-yard TD pass to Strasser in the second quarter.

Beyer outscored Ceres 21-0 in the third quarter.

Van Slyke scored on runs of 19 and 14 yards.

Ortega scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Tate hooked up with Valencia at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Valencia's catch-and-run score capped a 71-yard drive.
