Scudder, Rossi lead swimmers past Johansen

The Ceres High varsity boys swimming team finished 1-2-3 in the backstroke and won two of three relay events en route to a 97-94 victory over Johansen on Thursday in Modesto.

"It was a fun meet to observe and participate in," said Ceres coach Sue Garcia.

Ceres improved to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Johansen fell to 1-1 in the MMC standings.

"Every week, the kids are trying their hardest and putting forth their best effort in each race," Garcia said.

Ceres posted six first, seven second, six third, six fourth and two fifth-place finishes.

Joey Rossi took first in the 200 free in 1:58.82 and second in the 500 free in 5:17.94. Rossi set a personal record in the 500 free, which is a 20-lap race.

"He's trying to break 5:15," Garcia said. "He's really close."

Eric Scudder took first in the 100 free in 53.52 seconds and 100 back in 1:02.80.

J.C. Reed took first in the 100 breast in 1:12.52 and second in the 50 free in 25.60 seconds.

Mike Polovin took second in the 200 IM in 2:32.74 and third in the 100 back in 1:08.34.

Vincent Wester took second in the 100 fly in 1:11.98 and third in the 200 IM in 2:44.28.

Jason Winchester took second in the 100 breast in 1:12.86 and fourth in the 50 free in 26.90 seconds.

James Carswell took second in the diving competition.

Markus Richter took third in the 100 fly in 1:13.40 and 100 breast in 1:13.55.

Max Ottersbach took third in diving and fourth in the 200 IM in 2:48.87.

Cody Frampton took fourth in the 100 free in 1:02.97 and 100 back in 1:11.

Ryan Calou took fourth in the 100 fly in 1:18.85 and fifth in the 500 free in 6:42.64.

Ricky Heatherly took fifth in the 200 free in 2:34.59.

The 200-medley relay team of Scudder, Rossi, Calou and Reed took first in 1:55.35.

The 200-free relay team of Reed, Rossi, Scudder and Polovin took first in 1:55.35.

Ceres' 400-free "A" relay team took second in 4:02.16.

Ceres' 400-free "B" relay team took fourth in 4:32.65.

Ceres' 200-free "B" relay team took third in 1:54.09.

Varsity girls fall

The Ceres High varsity girls swimming team lost 130-59 to Johansen on Thursday in Modesto.

"When I was setting up the meet and looked at Johansen's times for the previous week, I knew it would be tough to beat them," Garcia said. "They have tremendous athletes."

Ceres fell to 0-2 in the Modesto Metro Conference.

Johansen improved to 2-0 in the MMC standings.

The Bulldogs took first in just one of 12 events.

Ceres had six second, four third, eight fourth and fivefifth-place finishes.

"They pretty much dominated all of the events," Garcia said.

Bailey MacArthur won the diving competition.

Katie Griffith placed second in the 200 free in 2:40.40 and 100 back in 1:10.60.

Kamie Machado placed second in the 100 fly in 1:12.01 and third in the 100 back in 1:14.17.

Jaymie Lenz placed second in the 100 breast in 1:15.03 and third in the 100 fly in 1:12.13.

"Kamie out touched Jaymie for second (in the 100 fly)," Garcia said.

Rachel Holder placed third in the 50 free in 26.97 seconds and fourth in the 100 breast in 1:19.11.

Lauren Griffin placed fourth in the 500 free in 6:20.12 and 100 back in 1:15.34.

Sarah Pullum placed fourth in the 200 IM in 2:49.29 and fifth in the 100 free in 1:03.99.

Amanda Arrollo placed fourth in the 100 free in 1:03.82 and fifth in the 50 free in 27.18 seconds.

Sarah Willems placed fifth in the 200 free in 2:42.32.

Tina Currie placed fifth in the 200 IM in 2:51.26.

Sam Walters placed fifth in the 500 free in 7:01.32.

Stephanie Jacobs placed sixth in the 200 free in 2:55.95.

Ceres placed second (2:05.01) and fourth (2:20.37) in the 200-medley relay.

Ceres placed second (1:53.10) and fourth (2:18.99) in the 200-free relay.

Ceres placed third (4:23.88) and fourth (5:16.28) in the 400-free relay.

JV girls lose

Johansen defeated Ceres 131-47 on Thursday in Modesto.

Cassandra Davis, Ashliegh Kauffman, Laura Goblirsch and Megan Breck turned in stellar performances for the Bulldogs.

Davis finished first in the 200 IM in 1:23.50 and second in the 100 breast in 1:31.96.

Kauffman finished first in the 500 free in 8:19.20 and second in the 50 free in 35.02 seconds.

Goblirsch finished third in the 200 IM in 1:34.65 and 100 free in 1:18.85.
