Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and Big Lots will be filling the vacant Hatch Road building once home to the Rancho San Miguel Market.

Christopher Noem, director of Community Development, on Monday announced the intent of both stores to operate within the 63,000 square feet that last saw retail sales in 2019 when the Rancho San Miguel grocery store closed.

The stores only need to obtain building permits since the store already exists. Remodeling will include partitioning off the space into two halves.

“I think it will be a good addition,” said Hoem. “I don’t have an anticipating opening date.”

Grocery Outlet was founded in 1946 and sells canned food and fresh meat and produce at discount. Today the chain has over 300 locations, including Modesto, Turlock and Oakdale.

Big Lots has over 1,400 stores in 47 states.

Big Lots, Inc., the nation’s largest closeout retailer, sells everything from consumables, seasonal products and furniture to housewares, toys and gifts. The company operates over 1,300 closeout stores in 45 states. The stores operate under the names Big Lots, Big Lots Furniture, Pic ‘n’ Save and Mac Frugal’s Bargains.

Big Lots recently filled the former J.C. Penney space in Turlock.
