When Major League Soccer club New York Red Bulls acquired Cade Cowell from Mexican club Chivas Guadalajara of Liga MX in December, the Ceres native talked about wanting to make a difference during his return to the United States.

Cowell, 22, has been recognized twice for his contributions at winger this year.

“I’m just trying to help the team as much as I possibly can,” he said.

On Aug. 3, Cowell was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday after dishing out two assists in New York’s 3-2 win against Orlando City SC.

He recorded his sixth career multi-assist match of his MLS career and his second as a member of the Red Bulls.

Cowell was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for the first time this season following New York’s 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew on May 14.

“Cade is improving in big ways,” Red Bulls’ head coach Michael Bradley stated. “We’re really pleased with the direction that he’s going.”

Cowell has earned the trust of his new coaches and teammates during his second stint in MLS.

Cowell collected two goals and seven assists through the Red Bulls’ first 18 matches

He missed a big part of the summer preseason with an ankle injury.

The Red Bulls currently sit in eighth place in the MLS Eastern standings with seven wins, four draws and seven losses.

Cowell has registered six goal contributions in his last seven matches.

“We’re really pleased with Cade’s understanding of some of the details that we think are really important to not only make him better, but to make our fútbol better,” Bradley said. “He’s finding really good ways to use his qualities and his profile as a player to be dangerous, to be effective. But he has also been really open to trying to work on some of the little things to help take him to the next level.”

“It’s starting to click,” Cowell added. “We train really hard every single day.”

Cowell returned to MLS this past winter after spending the previous two seasons with Chivas.

The Red Bulls acquired Cowell on Dec. 17 on a one-year loan with an option to buy following the 2026 season.

Cowell made history by becoming the first United States Men’s National Team player to suit up for Chivas.

He collected 12 goals and five assists in 69 appearances.

Cowell has been playing professional soccer since the age of 15.

He began his pro career with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2019 and spent five seasons with the MLS club.

A Homegrown Player, Cowell signed a first-team contract with San Jose in January of 2019. In five MLS seasons, the Quakes Academy product collected 10 goals and 15 assists in 104 appearances.

“I’m very excited to return to MLS again,” Cowell stated. “It will be a new challenge being on the East Coast, which I look forward to.”
