Students do well in 15th annual Academic Pentathlon

Junior high school students attending schools in Ceres, Keyes and Hughson performed quite well in the 15th Annual Stanislaus County Academic Pentathlon.

Ross Middle School students in Hughson won first place with 17,477.8 points followed by second-place Prescott Blue at 15,961.1 and Blaker Kinser Junior

Approximately 150 students participated in the one-day series of tests, speeches and essays. The culminating event was the Super Quiz and Awards Presentation at Blaker-Kinser Junior High School in Ceres.

Sponsored by the Stanislaus County Office of Education, Omega Nu and the Education Foundation of Stanislaus County, the Pentathlon promoted scholastic achievement and interschool competition in academics. In the Pentathlon, seventh- and eighth-graders competed as individuals and as team members in Speech and in a series of five tests in Mathematics, Fine Arts, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

The 10 participating schools were Blaker-Kinser, Creekside, Dutcher, Keyes Charter, La Loma, Oakdale, Prescott, Ross Middle School in Hughson, Turlock and Walnut Grove. Each school was able to send up to 18 students to serve as the team and students were placed in categories based on grade point average. 

Categories include Honors, 3.80-4.00 GPA; Scholastic, 3.25-3.79 GPA; and Varsity, 0.00-3.24 GPA.
