A 42-year-old woman was in stable condition at a Modesto hospital after being involved in a grinding solo crash on Hatch Road that left her car destroyed early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:27 a.m. immediately south of the Raising Cane’s Chicken on Hatch Road.

Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Dirk Nieuwenhuis said that Sarah Fonseca was driving westbound on Hatch Road in a Ford Crown Victoria when, for some unknown reason, the car drifted off the road, jumped the curb and over the sidewalk and collided into a power pole. The impact destroyed the driver’s side and pinned Fonseca inside. Police have not ruled out that alcohol may have been a factor.

Fonseca was trapped inside the wreckage for about 27 minutes while Modesto firefighters worked to cut the car open with the Jaws-of-Life. Suffering from major injuries, she was loaded into an ambulance and rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Police closed Hatch Road between Herndon Road and Richland Avenue for approximately four hours while officers from the Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) worked to process and clear the accident scene.

The crash is still under investigation. Any witnesses to this collision are encouraged to contact Community Service Officer Dave McCann at 209-538-5700, extension 6068 or by emailing him at david.mccann@ci.ceres.ca.us.
