Services were held for Carl Jasper Murphy, 80, of Ceres. He died May 14, 2008 at Evergreen Convalescent in Modesto after a long battle of dementia.

Born May 21, 1927, Carl was the second of 11 children growing up in Alabama. He served as Military Police in the Air Force from December 1947 to August 1953. He raised his family on a Livingston farm that was dubbed "Old Murphy's Farm." Carl and his wife also took in three of his nephews, Ronald Murphy, Charles Murphy and Robert Murphy, to raise.He worked off jobs in his life, including picking cotton as a young boy, working the fields at Superior Fruit Ranch near Ceres, for Modesto Tallow Works, and driving fork lift for Nalley's Fine Foods. Mr. Murphy also owned Atlantic Richfield gas stations in Hughson and Livingston. Mr. Murphy tanned deer and bear hides and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping.

He leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Virginia Murphy of Ceres; six children, Linda Reed of Arizona, Randy Murphy of Modesto, Vivian Regello of Ceres, Nelson Murphy of Stockton, Diania Murphy Barker of Ceres, Kenneth Murphy of Oakdale; two brothers, Truman Murphy of Columbia and Ralph Murphy of Copperopolis; three sisters, Yvonne Miller of Modesto, Jo Duck of Missouri and Christine Knutt of Colorado; and 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
