Ceres High School's varsity girls water polo team endured an 0-2 start to the 2014 Western Athletic Conference season.

The Bulldogs opened WAC play with an 8-6 loss to Pacheco on Sept. 30 in Los Banos.

"I don't think we should have lost," Ceres High head coach Stephen Dias said. "I think the kids were overexcited and overconfident."

Ashley Schmidt scored a team-high three goals for the Bulldogs.

Annie Connors, Kaitlyn Foster and Alissa Coker all contributed one goal.

Ceres High faced a 4-0 deficit at the end of the first period.

The Bulldogs trailed 4-2 at the break.

Both teams tallied four goals the rest of the game.

"We tightened our defense," Dias said.

Ceres High trailed from start to finish in losing 10-6 to visiting El Capitan of Merced on Thursday.

"We put up a really good fight," Dias said. "We wore out towards the end of the game."

Julia Pata led the Bulldogs in scoring with two goals.

Foster, Chelsea Amerson and Anna Rogers chipped in with one goal apiece.
