Ceres High's varsity girls tennis team opened the Western Athletic Conference season with back-to-back losses under first-year head coach Vince Vega's guidance last week.
"I'm proud of them," Vega said. "They tried their best."
The visiting Bulldogs were beaten 8-1 by the Patterson Tigers on Thursday.
Ceres High dropped five of six singles and all three doubles matches.
Shania Evans prevented the shutout by edging Patterson's Breanna Hernandez 6-4, 6-4 in No. 2 singles play.
"She was really focused the whole time," Vega said. "She was persistent. She made her opponent work hard."
Vivian Moreno lost 6-2, 6-1 to Ezie Ogbuli in No. 1 singles play.
Harmen Bahia lost 6-0, 6-2 to Marissa Tellas in No. 3 singles play.
Camille Vega lost 7-6, 6-2 to Erika Reynoso in No. 4 singles play.
Ariel Coria lost 6-0, 6-4 to Ryann Basulto in No. 5 singles play
Tania Garfias lost 7-6, 7-5 to Maya Turner in No. 6 singles play.
Morgan Bejaran and Kayla Sierras lost 7-6, 6-2 to Manpreet Kaur and Aurora Gonzalez Vela in No. 1 doubles play.
Vanessa Salas and Gurmen Bahia lost 6-2, 6-0 to Marisol Jimenez and Brenda Arias in No. 2 doubles play.
Jillian Jimenez and Elena Ochoa lost 6-4, 6-1 to Veronica Martinez and Tiffany Do in No. 3 doubles play.
Host Ceres High lost 9-0 to reigning WAC-champion Los Banos on Sept. 19.
"They have one of the best teams around," Vince Vega said.
The Bulldogs dropped all six singles and three doubles matches.
Moreno lost 6-0, 6-0 to Shirley Liu in No. 1 singles play.
Evans lost 6-2, 6-0 to Adriana Moreno in No. 2 singles play.
Harmen Bahia lost 6-0, 6-2 to Haley Ballez in No. 3 singles play.
Vega lost 6-0, 6-2 to Kierstyn Cotta in No. 4 singles play.
Coria lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kiara Azevedo in No. 5 singles play.
Garfias lost 6-0, 6-3 to Chloe Emerson in No. 6 singles play.
Bejaran and Sierras lost 6-2, 6-4 to Zoe Seabock and Bridget Lopez in No. 1 doubles play.
Salas and Gurmen Bahia lost 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 to Sarah White and Corie Falaschi in No. 2 doubles play.
Jimenez and Ochoa lost 6-4, 6-1 to Ally Watkins and Hannah Mevi in No. 3 doubles play.
Ceres High will play host to Pacheco tomorrow at 3 p.m. "It's a learning process for me and the team," coach Vega said. "We have a lot of new players. We'll improve."
