Ceres High School’s seventh-seeded boys soccer team edged eighth-seeded Valley 1-0 in overtime last Thursday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III playoffs.

“I’m just happy we got the win,” Bulldogs’ head coach Gilbert Zamora Jr. said. “It was a tough game. They were a very physical team. It’s a lot different from how we’re used to playing.”

Ceres High improved to 16-5-1 on the year. The Bulldogs placed first in the Western Athletic Conference with a 12-1-1 mark.

Valley posted a 16-7-4 overall record this season. The Vikings (8-0-2) tied for first place with Cordova in the Greater Sacramento League.

“It was a nail-biter game,” Zamora Jr. said. “We pulled it out. Now, we have to worry about the next game.”

Bulldog forward Enrique Murillo scored the winning goal during the third minute of the second 10-minute period of OT.

He put back Serjio Gonzalez’s shot attempt, which was blocked by Valley goalkeeper Luis Villalobos. Villalobos totaled 16 saves.

“He (Murillo) did his job,” Zamora Jr. said.

“We had more chances before that,” he added.

Noah Zamora, Luis Flores, Joshua Yepez, Eduardo Savala and Noah Trevino helped the Bulldogs notch their ninth shutout of the season.

Jesse Villalobs contributed at goalkeeper.

“Our defense was solid,” Zamora Jr. said. “They (Flores and Noah Zamora) are the heart of the team.”

Ceres High snapped Valley’s 13-game unbeaten streak.

The Bulldogs extended their unbeaten streak to 14 games.
