Central Valley High School varsity girls tennis players Chelsea Flores and Claudia Martinez advanced to the finals while teaming up at the Western Athletic Conference Doubles Tournament this past week.

Flores and Martinez didn't express any disappointment following their 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) loss to Pacheco's Aimee Wheeler and Mariah Moreno during the championship match Thursday at Ceres High.

Chelsea and Claudia played No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, for the Hawks during the regular season.

"It's pretty surprising," Martinez said. "This is our first time playing together. We had just one day of practice."

Added Flores: "We tried our best."

Flores and Martinez won three of four matches on their way to a runner-up finish at the doubles tourney.

Chelsea and Claudia beat Patterson's Catalina Borges and Kitzia Gonzales 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-9 in the semifinals.

Flores and Martinez won their quarterfinal matchup, 6-3, 6-0, versus Los Banos' Adri Moreno and Kiara Azevedo.

Flores and Martinez opened the tournament with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Livingston's Avneet Uppal and Amalia Barragan.

"I didn't think we'd get this far," Martinez said.

"It means a lot," Flores added.

Flores and Martinez advanced to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-II Doubles Tournament.

"They complement each other well," Hawks head coach Mike Rodriguez said. "Claudia is good at lobbing the ball. She's able to set up Chelsea at the net."

Said Chelsea: "We work well together."

Central Valley's two other doubles teams reached the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament.

Jadah Jackson and Vanessa Monroy defeated Los Banos' Taylor Torongo and Kylee Cardoza 6-7 (6-9), 6-3, 10-7 in the first round.

Jackson and Monroy lost 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 to Wheeler and Moreno.

Teresa Diaz and Bryana Lopez defeated Livingston's Jasdeep Bassi and Elisa Armenta 7-5, 7-5 in the opening round.

Diaz and Monroy lost 6-4, 6-3 to Ceres High's Andria Esho and Stephanie Garcia.
