Bulldogs open WAC play with pair of losses

Ceres High's varsity baseball program lost twice to Los Banos during the opening week of Western Athletic Conference play.

The Bulldogs dropped to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the WAC standings.

The Tigers improved to 5-4-1 and 2-0-0.

Los Banos outscored Ceres High 24-2 during the two-game series.

The Bulldogs stranded seven runners on base during their 5-1 loss to the Tigers on March 29 in Los Banos.

Ceres High committed two errors.

The Bulldogs totaled five hits on offense.

Sophomore Cesar Alvarez batted 1-for-3 from the plate with one RBI.

Sophomore Efrain Brito batted 1-for-3 with one run.

Brock DeWitt batted 2-for-3.

Adrian Magdaleno batted 1-for-2.

Ceres High scored its lone run in the top of the second inning.

Alvarez plated Brito with a single.

Los Banos tallied all five of its runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Magdaleno, Ceres High's ace pitcher, allowed three earned runs and six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six innings.

Host Ceres High dropped its WAC opener, 19-1, to Los Banos on March 26 at Art McRae Field.

The Tigers broke the contest open by tallying 10 runs in the top of the first inning.

Los Banos won by the mercy rule in the fifth inning.

Caleb Cannella, Isaiah Alcorn and Michael Aveytia, Ceres High's pitching staff, allowed nine earned runs and 14 hits with seven strikeouts and 11 walks in five innings.

Cannella (1-2) gave up nine runs and five hits with one strikeout and four walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Alcorn surrendered eight runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and six walks in 21/3 innings.

Aveytia yielded two runs and one hit with three strikeouts and one walk in two innings.

The Bulldogs mustered just four hits on offense.

Alvarez doubled.

DeWitt, Austin Schmidt and Xavier Mendoza all singled.

Sophomore Josh Pernetti accounted for Ceres High's run.

Ceres High will face Patterson (6-10-0, 1-1-0) twice next week.

The Bulldogs will play away on April 9 and host to the Tigers on April 12.

Both games will begin at 4 p.m.
