Ceres High School's varsity wrestling team placed 18th while participating in the California Coast Classic, held Dec. 28-29, in Aptos.

"Overall, we had a great time," Ceres High head coach Steve Festa said. "I would have liked to have more placers. We competed. We had some really good performances out there."

The Bulldogs totaled 69.5 points at the 67-team tournament.

Clovis (245), Gilroy (242) and Liberty (216) finished first, second and third, respectively.

"We were as high as 14th," Festa said. "We dropped a few places after the second day."

Ceres High's Tyree Williams, John Alba, Luis Camarillo, Diego Diaz, Michael Vargas and Conner Johnson advanced to the second day of the tournament.

Williams was the Bulldogs' lone placer.

Tyree, Ceres High's 182-pound grappler, took fifth with a 5-2 mark.

He won by pin over Hilmar's Gabriel Aguilar (3:30), Liberty's Christian Baker (1:31) and Bullard's Tommy Slatic (1:52), decision over Everrett Alvarez's Kevin Ruiz (6-4), and injury default over Las Lomas' Angelo Westmacott.

Williams had a perfect 11-0 record heading into the event.

"I'm proud of his results," Festa said. "Every match was tough."

Alba compiled a 4-2 record in the 152-pound weight division.

He won by pin over Los Banos' Cody Battles (1:39) and Edison's Muhammad Lateef (3:46), technical fall over Golden Valley's Jacob Enriquez (16-0), and major decision over Tamalpais' Ben Lavine (12-2).

Luis (126 pounds) and Diego (182s) posted identical 3-2 records.

Camarillo won by decision over Monta Vista Christian's Amman Klair (10-5), and technical fall over Serra's Kyle Wilson (15-0) and Terra Nova's Jacob Valdez (16-0).

Diaz won by pin over Clovis' Felipe Contreras (0:18) and Bullard's Tommy Slatic (3:31), and injury default over Gonzales' Jose luis Guido.

Michael (113s) and Conner (195s) both collected two wins and two losses.

Vargas won by major decision over Mount Whitney's Isaiah Almanza (13-5) and pin over Cesar Chavez's Johnson Le (2:03).

Johnson won by pin over Liberty's Chad Dias (1:58) and Madera's Nicholas Guillermo-Martinez (4:13).

Ceres High's Jaden Cooper (138s, 2-2), Ethan Letras (152s, 2-2), Aiden Moore (160s, 2-2), Brian Becerra (132s, 1-2), Isaac Soto (160s, 0-2) and Derian Cisneros (170s, 0-2) were all eliminated during the first day of competition.

"It was a tough tournament," Festa said. "It was an opportunity to learn and get better. I think we did. This is going to prepare us for the end of the season."

The Bulldogs will begin the Western Athletic Conference dual-meet conference portion of their schedule this week. Ceres High will face host Patterson today at 6 p.m.
