JV Dawgs rebound

The Ceres High JV football team opened the season with a 42-0 loss to the Manteca Buffaloes on Sept. 9. The Bulldogs rebounded with a 40-30 victory over Weston Ranch on Friday in Stockton.

"It was good for them to be able to bounce back," said Ceres coach Mike Corsaut. "They had a good week of practice. That was key."

The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars with a balanced attack.

Quarterback Zach Atchison passed for 167 yards and had four total touchdowns, Brett Sayad caught nine passes for 141 yards and three scores, and Mayiank Kumar rushed for 126 yards on seven carries. Matt Smith scored twice, including once on both offense and defense.

"We had great play all the way around," Corsaut said. "We actually executed. We made very few mistakes."

Ceres improved to 1-1 overall. The Bulldogs play host to Pitman on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

"We got to continue to get better," Corsaut said.

The Bulldogs totaled 337 yards of total offense against the Cougars. Atchison completed 14 of 21 passes. Sayad couldn't be stopped.

"They tried to double team him. And he'd still take the ball away from them," Corsaut said.

Weston Ranch racked up 316 yards of total offense, including 178 passing and 138 rushing.

"We gave up quite a few yards but that's okay," Corsaut said. "We won."

Kumar's 39-yard run set up Ceres' first score. Atchison's 1-yard sneak capped a six-play, 70-yard drive in the first quarter.

Ceres and Weston Ranch both scored twice in the second quarter.

Atchison engineered a nine-play, 52-yard scoring drive. He threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Sayad.

The Cougars responded with 14-unanswered points.

in nine plays. Atchison threw a 31-yard TD pass to Sayad for a 20-14 lead at halftime.

Down 22-20, the Bulldogs outscored the Cougars 18-8 in the fourth quarter.

Atchison's 2-yard TD strike to Sayad gave the Bulldogs a 26-22 lead. The Bulldogs drove 72 yards in six plays. Kumar had a 56-yard run.

Smith put the game out of reach with two touchdowns.

He intercepted a pass. Then proceeded to score on a 25-yard run play. Smith also returned an interception 34 yards for a score.
