Joyce Tusan-Dalton, a teacher at Vanden High School in Fairfield and former Ceres resident, died Sunday evening in a kayak accident on the American River.

Tusan-Dalton was trapped underwater when her kayak flipped over in the American River near the Watt Avenue Bridge in Sacramento. The victim was pinned against a bridge column and attempts to free her were unsuccessful because of the strong river current.

Her companion was swept down river, where he safely made it to shore.

Water rescue crews extended a line to the trapped victim and worked for several minutes before they were able to free her. Tusan-Dalton was transported to UC Davis Medical Center where she was declared dead.

Joyce lived on Hoyle Court while attending Ceres High School. Her mother, Evelyn Tusan (now Gscheidle) taught at Carroll Fowler School.

Tusan-Dalton taught art and ceramics at Vanden High School.
