The Ceres Blaze eight-and-under travel baseball team won all four of its games on its way to a first-place showing at the Supreme Tourneys Hittin Tanks event this past month at the Tracy Sports Complex.
“It was good to see the boys finish the summer season on top,” head coach Randy Wheeler said.
Top-seeded Ceres rallied for a 6-5 win over the second-seeded Regulators (Oakdale) in the championship game on July 26.
Both teams overcame deficits during the contest.
Jahaziel Lopez drove in the winning run with a walk-off triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“It was a good comeback,” Wheeler said.
Jeremiah Lopez evened the score at 5-5 with a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
“It was a clutch hit,” Wheeler said.
Ceres shut out third-seeded Galt Blue 8-0 in the semifinals on July 26.
The Blaze bested Galt Blue (21-1) and the Regulators (10-2) in seed play on July 25.
“I thought we’d have a chance (at placing first) going into the tournament,” Wheeler said. “But it’s baseball. You still have to play the games.”
Ceres competed in three tournaments this summer.
The Blaze took first at the Hittin Tanks event.
Ceres placed second at the Bel Passi All-Star Tournament and third at the 54th George Costa Invitational.
“The boys played well throughout the summer,” said Wheeler, whose team also claimed the TPR Spring Season Playoff Tournament championship in May. “It was exciting to see them learn, grow and develop. I’m very proud of them.”
