(CHOWCHILLA) – A 56-year-old Ceres man was involved a Thursday morning, Jan. 18 crash in the Madera crash that took the life of a 24-year-old Madera man.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:55 a.m. and involved six vehicles on fog-shrouded westbound Highway 152 at Road 9 west of Chowchilla.

Ceres truck driver Arturo Castro Carrillo was driving a 2015 Freightliner truck tractor, loaded with wood bundles of tree stakes, southbound on Road 9. He stopped at the stop sign and began crossing Highway 152 while seeing an approaching westbound car off in the distance. That car, a 2004 blue BMW 325 driven by Dani Torres Velasco, 26, of Fresno, was traveling too fast for the foggy conditions and crashed into Carrillo’s left rear trailer, the impact knocking off several bundles of stakes into road. The road hazard caused a number of chain-reaction crashes of several westbound vehicles, the first causing a fatality.

Not having time to react to the crash debris was a 24-year-old Madera man was driving a 2016 silver Mitsubishi Outlander. He crashed into the bundles of tree stakes, lost control, flipped over and slid across a lane where his car was struck by a Freightliner tractor-trailer rig driven by Udham Singh, 70, of Fresno.  The driver of the Mitsubishi died instantly.

Velasco sustained minor injuries and was transported via ambulance to Clovis Community Hospital.

Two other vehicles drove into the debris field but were not injured. They were a 2014 Freightliner truck driven by Victor Delgadillo, 35, of Fresno; and a 2023 Honda Pilot driven by Elizabeth B. Hernandez, 37, of Madera.
