The driver of a Subaru attempting to pass another vehicle on Santa Fe Avenue Thursday morning crashed head-on into another vehicle, resulting in the death of the same driver.

The collision occurred at 6:32 a.m. on Santa Fe Avenue, south of Monte Vista Avenue in Denair.

The driver of the 1998 Subaru SUV, a 63-year-old Modesto man was northbound on Santa Fe when he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him. He rolled into the southbound lane and an oncoming 2003 Toyota driven by Trinidad Magana, 62, of Hughson. The force of the head-on crash knocked the Toyota backwards and into a 2002 Nissan also traveling southbound on Santa Fe Avenue. Ricardo Gallegos, 48, of Modesto was driving the Nissan. Gallegos was not injured.

The Subaru SUV came to rest straddling both lanes facing an easterly direction, said CHP spokesperson Officer Tom Olsen.

The Toyota sedan came to a rest west of the southbound lane facing the east.

The Nissan SUV came to a rest partially off the west edge of the road and facing south.

The 63-year-old Modesto driver was rushed by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. His name had not been released.

Magana was taken by air ambulance to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries.

It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the collision.

The CHP reminds drivers to pass only when safe to do so and when not a solid line and that the speed limit on an undivided highway is 55 miles per hour.
