Santa Fe Avenue shooting death being investigated

Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting death which occurred Tuesday evening along Santa Fe Avenue between Hughson and Denair.

A group of passerbys reported seeing the male victim of the shooting, Steven Elliot Losey, 25, of Riverbank, who was sitting inside of a white pickup parked along Santa Fe Avenue near an orchard just south of Berkeley Avenue. They called 911 at approximately 8:30 p.m. and deputies responded a short time later.

Despite lifesaving efforts by paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Just after 9 p.m. detectives learned that a second victim had arrived at a hospital in Merced County with a non-life threatening gunshot wound which they believed to be linked to the homicide.The second victim is an adult male and detectives are trying to determine his relationship to Losey.

Santa Fe Avenue was closed for hours as the Sheriff's Department collected evidence and examined the crime scene. Early Wednesday morning detectives located what they believe to be the crime scene which is a short distance from where Losey crashed his vehicle. Detectives spent the afternoon processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
