A Modesto man was hospitalized after he was attacked by two men during a drug deal gone bad at the Budget Inn on Ninth Street near Ceres.

Sheriff's Department spokesman Rajinder Singh said that two men were arrested for the Sept. 6 assault.

The victim drove to the motel and went inside a room where Larry Eugene Smith, 33, and Channing Wilson Green, 36, both of Modesto, were waiting. The men began attacking the man and robbed him of his cash.

"The victim was struck several times with a machete," said Singh. "He was struck in the back, head, and upper torso. One injury required 10 staples."

After the man fled the motel at 6 a.m. crime he drove to his house in the 3000 block of Seventh Street in South Modesto. The man was rushed to a Modesto hospital for treatment.

Deputies were given a good description of the assailants, said Singh, and spotted Smith riding a black motorcycle. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, robbery and false imprisonment. He also is being charged with auto theft since the motorcycle he was on was allegedly stolen.
