Ceres American Legion Post #491 will conduct an hour long Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30 at Ceres Memorial Park on Whitmore Avenue and the public is invited. The event will feature the Avenue of Flags.

Post 491 will also pay a special tribute to Corpsman James Layton and local teacher Marilyn Woods.

Any citizen who would like to assist the American Legion with the placement of the flags is welcome to come down at 6:15 a.m. All help is welcome.

The public is also welcome to assist the Ceres VFW Auxiliary in putting American flags on each veterans' grave on Saturday, May 28. VFW Auxiliary members are meeting at 9 a.m. at the cemetery.

"We are asking the community's help to see that each veterans grave receives an American flag," said Kathryn Cotner, VFW Auxiliary President. "Some graves are not marked as veterans and so each year we miss a few. If a member of the family is able to come to the cemetery on Saturday to assist us in locating their loved one's grave, we would certainly appreciate it."

Headstones that already note military service does not require any additional direction from the family. However, all help will be accepted

"We will also leave extra flags with the cemetery office for family members to pick up and place on their veteran's grave if we have missed it."
