Jose Beltran has been selected to become principal of Walter White Elementary School effective at the start of the 2008-09 school year.

Beltran has served for two years as the principal of Virginia Parks Elementary School, a California Distinguished School and National Blue Ribbon School.

"I know that Mr. Beltran and the staff of Virginia Parks have done some great work over the last two years," said Superintendent Walt L. Hanline. "Jose will bring classroom and leadership experience to Walter White to lead the staff there in making great progress. I believe he will become a true role model for students and staff."

Taking on Beltran's role as principal of Virginia Parks will be Jennifer Backman, who is currently an assistant principal at Central Valley High School. Backman, who joined CUSD as a program specialist in 2005, has also served as an assistant principal at Ceres High School. She has a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, a Multiple Subjects credential and a range of Special Education credentials and certifications.

"Jennifer's site and special education experiences prepared her well for the challenges of leading an outstanding elementary school such as Virginia Parks," said Hanline.

Laura Fong, the Lead Learning Director at Central Valley High School, has been promoted to assistant principal effective July 1.

"Laura has been a leader in making CVHS a special school for teachers and students," said Principal Fred Van Vleck. "She has addressed challenges professionally and productively, whether designing curriculum, serving on district level committees or carrying out any of her diverse responsibilities. We look forward to supporting Laura as she continues to grow and develop."
